Course Description

This course presents barbering theory for the following subjects: history of barbering, barber implements, tools and equipment, shaving and facial design, men's styling, and haircutting.

Justification

This course is required by the State Cosmetology Board to prepare students in cosmetology/barbering theory and practices. The course content will help prepare students to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology License Examination (NIC test).

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will list safety precautions to follow during all client services, explain hazardous material safety procedures and will identify the principles of prevention.
  2. Students will understand the basic theory of men's hair design, straight razor shaving, men's haircutting and beard design.
  3. Students will be able to use the appropriate tools and methods to perform all the services related to the cosmetology/barbering profession.

Course Content

Course objectives will be accomplished by providing students with learning experiences in the following subject areas:-client consultation-recognizing barbering implements-use of clippers, guards and straight razors -selecting proper implements for cutting all hair types-performing taper cuts with and without the use of guards-proper use of shaving strokes -beard trimming to match facial shape-cutting hair with various implements for style cuts-use of first aid for cuts, burns, and other emergencies-safety measures for all techniques in nails, facials, coloring, cutting, and chemical relaxing.
