Course Description

This course gives students the hands-on lab experience required for Auto 1201. It covers theory, operation, diagnosis, and overhaul procedures of automotive automatic transmissions and trans-axles, including planetary gearing, valve bodies, computerized transmission controls, torque converters, and torque converter lock-up.

Justification

This course is required for Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) certification and ASE Education Foundation accreditation. It is approved by the advisory committee. It is a core course for the Automotive Technology AAS degree and certificates.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to safely perform the tasks listed in the current edition of ASE Education Foundation Certification and Accreditation for Automobile Training Programs.
  2. Students will understand the components of a planetary gear set, know the gear combinations that can be obtained and diagnose component failures.
  3. Students will be able to use the appropriate specialized tools and equipment to diagnose and repair automatic transmissions and transaxles.
  4. Students will be able to diagnose, repair, and adjust transmission apply devices, clutches, bands, and mechanical holding devices.
  5. Students will understand the power flow through automatic transmissions and use this to diagnose component failures.
  6. Students will maintain a reasonably clean work environment.
