Course Description

This course provides students with individual guitar instruction. Music majors receive one-hour lessons for 12 weeks of the semester. Private instruction is required of music majors each semester in college. This course is repeatable for credit. This course develops a student’s technical, interpretive, sight reading, pedagogical and improvisational skills as well as developing a student’s understanding of the history and repertory of the guitar.

Justification

As an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), Snow College is required to provide competent private instruction for music majors in all vocal and instrumental specialties. Private instruction is required of music majors in four-year music degree programs and must appear on student transcripts. Courses of this type are taught at all NASM accredited institutions in Utah.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of fingerboard theory appropriate for second year study.
  2. Students will demonstrate guitar technique appropriate for second year study.
  3. Students will demonstrate an ability to accurately read at sight materials appropriate for second year study including standard notation and tablature.
  4. Students will demonstrate an ability to improvise over ii-V-I changes.
  5. Students will demonstrate an ability to transpose all assigned work into other keys.
  6. Students will demonstrate authentic stylistic command of all assigned materials.
