Course Description

This course is designed to give students a foundation in English grammar and vocabulary. The course will also focus on helping students improve their listening comprehension and speaking skills.

Justification

The ESL Department at Snow College houses the intensive ESL program which is accredited through the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP). The four-level program provides instruction for students at Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (elementary through exiting levels). This course is a core course for Level 1. It introduces students to the type of grammar they must know in order to be successful in Level 2 ESL courses.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate improvement in their understanding of and use of specific English grammatical structures taught in the course. Students will use level 1 grammatical structures in speech and writing.

Students will work with and learn about the following grammatical structures:• Count/no count nouns • Present time • Modals • Phrasal verbs • Past time • Object pronouns • Some/any compounds • Comparative, superlative • Future time
