Course Description

This course develops English language learners’ grammar knowledge in both speaking and writing. Students will learn to identify and use key linguistic components—including nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions—to describe everyday life events and activities. Grammar instruction will be integrated into communicative tasks that promote accuracy and fluency. Students will build grammatical control and apply CEFR A1 and A2 level vocabulary accurately in spoken and written contexts. This course is cross-listed with CED 0280 (Level 1 Grammar – Continuing Education).

Justification

The ESL Department at Snow College provides a three-level grammar sequence designed to prepare non-native speakers of English for academic coursework. ESL 0280 serves as the foundation course in this sequence. It offers essential instruction in fundamental English grammar concepts, including parts of speech, articles, phrase and sentence structures, and tenses. Students gain basic grammar knowledge necessary to move towards intermediate level grammar instruction in Level 2.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of ESL 0280, students will be able to accurately identify and use basic parts of speech in simple sentences in both writing and speaking.
  2. Upon successful completion of ESL 0280, students will be able to use grammatical forms and structures correctly in word, phrase, and sentence levels while writing and speaking.
  3. Upon successful completion of ESL 0280, students will be able to use CEFR A1 and A2 level vocabulary accurately and fluently in writing and speaking.

Course Content

Instruction focuses on building fundamental grammar knowledge in students through structured, context based practice. Students will learn grammatical structures, including count and noncount nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, present time, phrasal verbs, past time, and future time. Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of these grammar points through completing grammar exercises, working on group assignments, giving presentations, and taking quizzes and exams.
