Course Description

This course advances English language learners’ grammatical accuracy and fluency in speaking and writing. Students will learn to describe and discuss academic life events and experiences using more complex present, past, and future time frames. Instruction emphasizes accurate use of verb tenses, modals, and passive voice structures in both oral and written communication. Contextualized grammar activities build learners’ confidence in applying grammar to academic and everyday topics. Students will strengthen their command of CEFR B1 and B2 level grammar and vocabulary. This course is cross-listed with CED 1080 (Level 3 Grammar – Continuing Education).

Justification

The ESL Department at Snow College provides a three-level grammar sequence designed to prepare non-native speakers of English for academic coursework. ESL 1080 serves as the advanced level course in this sequence. It offers essential instruction in English grammar concepts, including advanced clause and sentence structures, tenses, and aspects. Students gain grammar knowledge necessary to move towards integrated level grammar instruction in Level 4 - TOEFL Preparation.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of ESL 1080, students will be able to write and speak with level-appropriate accuracy and fluency in form and structure.
  2. Upon successful completion of ESL 1080, students will be able to present ideas with accuracy and fluency in vocabulary and organization through a variety of phrase, clause, and sentence structures.
  3. Upon successful completion of ESL 1080, students will be able to use CEFR B1 and B2 level vocabulary accurately and fluently in writing and speaking.

Course Content

Instruction focuses on building advanced-level grammar knowledge in students through structured, context-based practice. Students will learn grammatical structures, including complex phrases, clauses, compound and complex sentences, subject-verb agreement, active and passive voices, and advanced present, past, and future time frames. Students will learn to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of these grammar points through completing grammar exercises, working on group assignments, giving presentations, and taking quizzes and exams. Students will practice and learn to write and discuss topics that are relevant to common academic life situations with oral and written grammatical accuracy and fluency.
