Course Description

This course introduces English language learners to reading, analyzing, and discussing literary works. Students will explore a variety of genres, including short stories, poetry, drama, and excerpts from novels, to develop an understanding of literary themes, characters, and plot. Emphasis is placed on building advanced reading comprehension, critical thinking, and vocabulary through close reading and class discussion. This course is cross-listed with CED 1170 (Level 4 Introduction to Literature – Continuing Education).

Justification

ESL 1170 - Level 4 Introduction to Literature serves as introductory content-based reading course in the Snow College intensive English program. It provides instruction to the study of literary genres, themes, characters, and styles. The course prepares non-native English speakers with skills to think about and respond to literature, competence in cultural literacy, and readiness for success in across disciplines. This course supports Snow College's mission to prepare non-native English speakers for successful integration and participation in college life.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of ESL 1170, students will be able to analyze literary genres by identifying key elements, including theme, character, and plot.:
  2. Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to discuss literary works using appropriate terminology and academic vocabulary.
  3. Students will be able to write analytical responses that express personal insights and critical understanding of literary works with grammatical accuracy and coherence.

Course Content

Instruction focuses on introducing advanced English language learners to the study and appreciation of literature in English. Students will read and analyze a variety of literary genres, including poetry, drama, and short stories from various American authors. Students will be introduced to literary terms for discussion and understanding. They will learn to identify literary elements such as theme, character, plot, and figurative language, while expanding academic vocabulary and grammatical accuracy in literary contexts. Students will study how background information and biographical sketches of authors can be used to analyze and evaluate literature. Students will learn to demonstrate their understanding of literary works both orally and in writing with clarity and depth.
