Health Scholars FAQ

Yes! As long as you are in the UHS program, your official college advisor will be through UHS. UHS staff are certified through the National Association of Advisors in Health Professions (NAAHP) and attend multiple trainings every month on a national and state level. They complete extensive trainings and research to ensure students receive the most accurate information in pursuing varying positions in the healthcare field. They will make sure you graduate from Snow College, but they will also ensure you are taking the correct prerequisites for your prospective program and career.

UHS provides a large variety of resources outside of course material and one-on-one advising. All course materials are purchased for students and events serve little to no cost. We often attend student conferences where hotel rooms, food, and transportation are all provided. There are for-profit programs that charge much more for our same services. For example, they will charge upwards of $1100 for one personal statement consult. We build personal statement structures into every course, provide multiple application workshops to work through the essay portion, and staff will meet with you as many times as needed to coach you through each draft. Snow College’s UHS fee is also significantly less compared to our other campuses.

To stay in the UHS program at Snow College and receive all resources and advisement, you must take a one credit UHS course each semester. The course should take no more than 3 hours each week including your service. Credit hours should be calculated into a time frame:

  • Credit hour(s) x 1 = In class lecture or online topic content
  • Credit hour(s) x 2 = Homework or service hours outside of class or general content

If you have 15 credits this semester, you should expect about 15 hours of in-class lecture plus 30 hours of out-of-class homework and study. 15 credit hours is 45 hours of work per week.

UHS 1 credit course breakdown

  • 50 - 60 min: In Class Lecture or Online Topic Content
  • 30 - 45 min: Weekly UHS Assignment
  • 60 - 90 min: Consistent weekly service hours

The Beginner’s course is designed to provide healthcare career coaching and a basic understanding of the varying components of the application process, and how to stay competitive. The Advanced Seminar topic courses are designed to expand your knowledge of the healthcare industry thus teaching you talking points for applications or interviews and supporting your future efficacy as a healthcare professional. We will help you get into a program, but our goal is also to build holistic and empathetic providers. The Advanced Seminars give you opportunity to develop key soft skills, understanding of the healthcare system, and maintain access to all the resources, events, and advising.

Yes! You will always be welcomed into the program with no negative effect.

If you are pursuing any healthcare career, you will need to prove on paper that you are service-driven. You do this by completed consistent service! Based on national and state data on student acceptance to healthcare programs, we recommend students obtain at least 100 service hours before applying to an Associate or Bachelor level program, and at least 200 service hours before applying to a Graduate or Doctoral program. If you break this up into semesters, it adds up to 25 hours per semester.

During the Beginner’s Course of UHS you will be required to complete 25 hours of unpaid service to an organization of your choice. Service is the first extracurricular students should focus on and is typically the easiest to obtain during Freshman and Sophomore years. After you complete the Beginner’s course, all the Advanced Seminar topic courses allow your hours to open up to unpaid community service, paid/unpaid leadership positions, job shadowing, academic research with a faculty member, or patient exposure.
