Majors, Minors, and Academic Departments

  • A major is the primary subject a student decides to study in college. Most courses students take in college, other than general education courses, are major courses.  If a student wants to teach school, he can be an education major.  If a student wants to go into business, she can be a business major.  Academic advisers and professors are excellent resources to help you select a major area of interest.  Students who are planning on transferring to a four-year institution will usually not select a major until they arrive at the four-year school of their choice.  For more information on majors, click HERE.
  • A minor is a secondary subject area a student may study in college. It is less intensive and requires fewer courses to complete than a major.  Minors are optional programs and are not required for graduation.  Snow College does not offer minor programs.  As you transfer to four-year institutions, you can learn more about minors.
  • Academic programs that offer courses, majors, minors, degrees and certificates are located in academic departments. An academic department is headed by a faculty leader called a department chair.  Each faculty member in a department has a specialization.  For example, the music department has faculty who specialize in string instruments, jazz, brass instruments, voice, music theory and music history.  The English department has specialists in creative writing, English literature, American literature, folklore, and technical writing.  The transportation technology department has faculty specialists in automotive electrical systems, diesel engines, and drivetrains.  To learn more about individual academic departments, click https://www.snow.edu/academics/divisions.html.
