Snow College Holds 52nd Annual FFA Day
High school students come from locations across Utah to take part in the event
November 1, 2022 – Ephraim, UT – Snow College hosted over 2,200 students from 79 different high schools across the state of Utah in its annual Future Farmers of America (FFA) Field Day event. In this annual event, students compete in 11 areas relating to agriculture.
Students competed in events such as livestock and horse evaluation, veterinary science, forestry, and soil evaluation. These events are designed to have a real-world feel and prepare students for future careers in agriculture.
Matthew Goble, Agriculture Technology Instructor, explained that while there is a huge interest in the horse and livestock competitions, there is much more to production agriculture, and he loves the connections students make when they get involved in agronomy and range contests. He said, “Most livestock spend the majority of their time grazing. Can you identify the plants they eat? Or which ones are toxic to them? What about calculating stocking rates? I think that the students find that many of the contests that are seen as ‘uncool’ end up being their favorites in the end.”
FFA Field Day provides Snow College students with invaluable experience as well. Running an event like this is no small task. The event is hosted by Snow’s Badger Ag Club. The students are involved throughout the planning and decision-making process, helping them to gain leadership and workplace skills.
